This fascinating city in the Netherlands, often overshadowed by its more famous sister, Amsterdam, is a true paradise for art and architecture enthusiasts. Here, modern design meets creative energy, offering an experience that will leave you captivated. Let Rotterdam enchant you a city that not only surprises but draws you deeper into its charm with every step.

Stunning modern architecture

After World War II, Rotterdam underwent a complete rebirth and has since become a globally recognized hub for innovative architecture. The city’s skyline is truly one of a kind, with futuristic skyscrapers, groundbreaking buildings, and iconic structures defining the landscape. A must-see is the Cube House (Kubuswoning) – an extraordinary architectural masterpiece that seems to defy gravity. The Markthal, a massive indoor market dominated by a vibrant, colorful art installation, is another highlight you can’t miss.

Rotterdam’s architecture is a true feast for the eyes of anyone who appreciates unique buildings and urban design. The best part? The city remains a hidden gem, free from the crowds of tourists typically found in other destinations.

In addition to the modern character of the city, there is also a charming little harbor with old buildings, picturesque located along a canal, “historical Delfshaven.”

Experience art and culture

Rotterdam is a haven for art lovers. The city pulses with culture, and you can feel it everywhere. At the Kunsthal Rotterdam, you’ll find fascinating exhibitions ranging from contemporary art to classical masterpieces. For those who adore modern art, the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum offers an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and design objects. Throughout the city, you’ll come across street art, graffiti, and installations that add to the urban vibe.

A special tip for art enthusiasts: Head to the Witte de Withkwartier, a vibrant neighborhood filled with small galleries, design shops, and independent artist studios. Here, you can experience the creative soul of the city up close.

Culinary delights

Rotterdam isn’t just a melting pot of architecture and art, but it’s also a culinary hotspot. The food scene is as exciting as the city itself, with an abundance of options from trendy cafés to Michelin-starred restaurants. Some favorite recommendations:

Putaine is a trendy restaurant in Rotterdam, located right on the water, offering stunning views of the harbor. Known for its creative menu and stylish ambiance, it serves bold flavors and contemporary fine dining dishes. With its unique setting, Putaine provides a memorable dining experience, perfect for enjoying a meal or cocktail while watching the boats go by.

At the Fenix Food Factory, housed in a former industrial building, you can savor local specialties and hand-crafted delicacies. There is also included a charming bookshop. Definitley a place for creatives and foodies.

The New York Hotel and Restaurant in Rotterdam is an opulent gem located in the Kop van Zuid district. Housed in a historic former shipping office, it combines classic elegance with modern luxury. The restaurant is renowned for its exquisite dishes, including fresh oysters, served with stunning views of the harbor. It’s the perfect place to indulge in both refined cuisine and the city’s rich maritime history. I came there by boat taxi, what should be on everyone’s to do for Rotterdam.

Rotterdam is full of hidden treasures that are off the typical tourist radar. The city is known for its secret spots, where you can escape the crowds and find something truly special. One particularly magical place is Het Park, a beautiful park perfect for a walk or a picnic, offering a peaceful break from the urban hustle. In the summer months, you can also enjoy boating or simply relax in the serene surroundings. These romantic houses directly on the beach aren’t for everyone! You have to check very well if it’s kids friendly, because some of the beach houses on the coast of the Netherlands have very dangerous ladders to a second floor. It’s always and I mean always(!) sandy, you live on the beach. They aren’t luxurious, but comfy and well organized. If you can’t walk, they aren’t made for you. There is a luggage service, but when you like to visit one of the restaurants you have to walk on the sandy beach to get to a proper way.
We love them and check always longer off season weekends to book a stay.
