If you’re someone who finds the scorching summer heat overwhelming but still dreams of a getaway filled with coastal beauty, charming villages, and the pleasures of French culture, look no further than Normandy.
Your cooler summer getaway in Normandy France

Nestled in the northwestern corner of France, Normandy offers a refreshing escape with its milder summer temperatures, stunning beaches, and enchanting villages. This region provides the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure, all while savoring the rich French art de vivre.

1. Deauville-Trouville: Elegance meets the sea

First on the list is Deauville-Trouville, two iconic seaside towns that exude sophistication. Deauville, known for its glamorous history, boasts luxury boutiques, a chic boardwalk, and an upscale casino, making it a top destination for those looking to indulge in some refinement. Its famous sandy beach is lined with colorful parasols and grand hotels, offering a truly cinematic experience. Just across the way, Trouville provides a more relaxed, yet equally charming atmosphere, with its bustling fish market and cozy beachside cafés. Whether you’re strolling along the beach, people-watching, or enjoying a delicious seafood platter, Deauville-Trouville will leave you feeling like you’ve stepped into the pages of a French novel.

2. Honfleur: The artistic heart of Normandy
Honfleur is a picturesque port town that has inspired countless artists over the centuries. Its cobbled streets, colorful half-timbered houses, and vibrant harbor are a photographer’s dream. The town’s enchanting atmosphere and historical charm make it one of the most beloved destinations in Normandy. Stroll around the old port, sip a coffee at a café, and explore the charming art galleries scattered throughout. Don’t miss the stunning Sainte-Catherine Church, built entirely out of wood, and the many shops offering local crafts. Honfleur’s combination of beauty and artistic heritage makes it an absolute must-visit.

3. Caen: History, culture, and photogenic charm
For those interested in history, Caen offers a fascinating glimpse into Normandy’s past. This vibrant city is home to two incredible landmarks: the Caen Memorial Museum, which details the D-Day landings and the events of World War II, and the Château de Caen, a medieval fortress built by William the Conqueror. In addition to its historical sites, Caen boasts a photogenic charm that is perfect for those who appreciate a blend of culture and beauty. The city’s narrow, winding streets and picturesque squares provide endless opportunities for photos, while the city’s pretty bookstores make it a haven for book lovers.

4. The Countryside: Perfect villages and the cider route
Venture just a bit inland from the coastline and you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush landscapes and picturesque villages. Places like Beaumont-en-Auge, with its cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and fairytale ambiance, are straight out of a storybook. Along with these charming villages, you’ll discover the famous Cider Route. This scenic path takes you through Normandy’s apple orchards, where you can visit cider farms and taste the region’s finest ciders and calvados. The slower pace and beauty of Normandy’s countryside offer a delightful escape from the more touristy coastal areas, perfect for those who want to soak in the rustic charm of this region.

5. Charming villages and seaside escapes: More reasons to visit Normandy

If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, Normandy offers plenty of options. Beyond its well-known coastal towns, Normandy is home to a collection of quieter seaside villages between Honfleur and Vierville-sur-Mer that are perfect for unwinding and immersing yourself in the French way of life. These places provide an ideal base for a longer stay, where you can enjoy the beauty of the beach without the crowds.

I highly recommend a visit to some of my personal favorite villages. One that stands out is Blonville-sur-Mer a hidden gem with a peaceful atmosphere and a delightful beach. It’s the perfect spot to unwind. Along with Blonville, there are several nearby villages that truly capture the essence of Normandy’s coastal life. Each offers its own unique charm, from quiet beaches to charming local cafés.

Here are my top recommendations:
- Blonville-sur-Mer : Serene atmosphere, very small and a lovely beach.
- Villers-sur-Mer : A picturesque village with a warm, welcoming vibe, very picturesque!
- Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer : Perfect for those seeking a quiet retreat by the sea
- Courseulles-sur-Mer : A charming village with delicious seafood and local markets, great kids activities
These villages not only boast the freshest seafood you’ll ever taste but also have quaint local markets where you can find everything from fresh baguettes to artisanal ciders. The laid-back feel of these spots makes them the perfect escape from the crowds of larger resorts. If you’re craving a peaceful getaway with a touch of Normandy’s coastal charm, these are the places I personally recommend.

If you’re also someone who enjoys the simple pleasures of food and drink, Normandy is a region full of culinary delights. From mussels gathered from the shores to mouthwatering crepes and locally produced cider, every moment in this region feels like a treat for the senses.

Why Normandy is the perfect summer escape for cooler temperatures

While much of Europe experiences intense summer heat, Normandy stands out with its mild, refreshing climate, making it an ideal choice for those who prefer cooler temperatures. With average temperatures hovering around 20-25°C (68-77°F) in the summer months, you can enjoy the beauty of the beach and the outdoors without the oppressive heat of southern destinations. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, exploring coastal towns, or discovering hidden gems inland, Normandy’s mild summer temperatures provide the perfect environment for relaxation and exploration. You can go swimming on the ocean nevertheless, it’s awesome!
